AMEC awarded circa £100m contract by EDF Energy for West Burton gas-fired power station
AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, has been awarded a circa £100 million contract by EDF Energy for the mechanical, electrical and instrumentation installation at EDF Energy’s new 1,300MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station at its West Burton site in Nottinghamshire, UK.
The contract will see AMEC play a major role in taking the station to completion in 2011, including the installation of the gas turbines, heat recovery steam generator and the balance of plant. The company begins mobilisation and planning work immediately and is expected to start on site in March.
CCGT technology is an efficient and clean method of fossil fuel power generation. EDF Energy has committed to reduce the intensity of CO2 emissions from its electricity production. To do this while helping to maintain security of supply for the UK, EDF Energy is diversifying its generation portfolio and West Burton B is a key step in this overall strategy.
“This is an important contract for AMEC,” said Mike Saunders, President of AMEC’s Power and Process Europe business. “EDF Energy is a highly valued customer for us in a number of business areas, including nuclear power and gas storage. This award continues to position AMEC as a leading supplier in the growing energy CCGT market.”
The contract, which was awarded following a competitive process, will be run from the Darlington offices of AMEC’s Power and Process Europe business.
Graeme Bellingham, Project Director for EDF Energy, said: “This major project for EDF Energy will supply enough power to provide for the needs of around 1.5 million homes and we are delighted that the skills and expertise of AMEC will play a key role in its development.”
